Icons are used to convey actions, differentiate content or provide additional context to text or objects.
Icons in buttons should be functional — clicking or touching them should perform an action.
While our visual identity allows for the use of icons in our actual content (infographics, process charts, etc.), when we use them in user interfaces, we should only use functional icons that are as clear as possible and widely understood. When designs use icons decoratively, users are confused, frustrated and hindered in their ability to complete a task.
Our digital designs use the icons from Font Awesome, an open-source icon library that is available for commercial use. Designers and developers can download the icon font, individual SVGs, a webkit or CDN.
